More American adults are single than ever before. In fact, according to the U.S. census, there are 110,000,000 unmarried people over the age of 18 living in the United States. So, if you’re single, welcome to the club!
It seems the December holidays can bring up memories (both positive and not so positive) like no other time of the year. So much emotion seems to rest on just one day. So, relax and apply a few of these tips to have the best holiday ever, one filled with gratitude and new beginnings.
Spend some time with your friends - Especially if your family lives far away or you’re not able to join them for holiday festivities this year, call up some friends and throw a little holiday get-together at your home - or theirs. Pull out the board games, pull up Netflix, and plan to cook some delicious food everyone will love… Enjoy!
Get outside - Even if just for a few days, holiday vacation is the perfect time to take a walk or hike outside. Get some air and some exercise, and treat yourself to the gift of Nature that we all share. (If you want to get a jumpstart on a new hobby in 2020, why not try a little bird watching?)
Give to others - This holiday, put the give-and-receive cycle into motion! The holidays are truly about giving to others. There are so many people, including the elderly, sick, and homeless, whose lives can be brightened by your generosity this time of the year, and every day. Help at a food bank or shelter, or bring a stocking to that neighbor down the road that you see in passing. (If you’re attending a party, offer to help the host… and let your heart shine!)
Revel in your solitude and freedom - The 2019 holiday season is extra special. Not only is this year drawing to a close, but we’re also celebrating the end of one decade and the beginning of another! Curl up with your favorite beverage and review your year and decade. Write in your journal. Meditate. Dream about the 2020s and everything your heart desires. While you’re at it, why not make a gratitude list - and add to it each day before the New Year?
Take a trip that you’ll never forget - You don’t need to have a house full of people to feel “at home”. You can feel at home with yourself anywhere you are. Where would you like to go - in your town, state, country, or internationally? How would you like to spend your time? Explore. Be open to new experiences. The secret here is not how far you travel in miles, but how deep you travel inside. Start thinking about and enacting some new traditions of your own making.
